Antonio Conte: Spurs need two more transfer windows to be title contenders | Tottenham Hotspur

Antonio Conte says he needs at least two more transfer windows to turn Tottenham into real challengers for the Premier League title.

Spurs started the season well by taking 10 points from a possible 12 after the 2-0 win at Nottingham Forest on Sunday. The London club sit in third place, level on points with Manchester City and just two of bitter rivals Arsenal, who are early leaders.

This fueled rumors that Tottenham would finish in the top four again and even back a title challenge until the end of the campaign. Conte dismissed the latter possibility as not yet realistic.

“If you compare to last season, we are more complete,” Conte said. “But to reach other teams at the highest level, we need time, patience and transfer markets, at least two transfer markets to reach the same level.”

Spurs have made a number of signings this summer, the most high-profile being Richarlison from Everton, Yves Bissouma from Brighton, Ivan Perisic from Internazionale and Clement Lenglet on loan from Barcelona. Asked about the possibility of acquiring more players before the transfer window closes on Thursday, Conte said: “I spoke with the club and gave them my opinion but, if we do something or not, it’s fine. .

“With the new players, we started working with them in just a month and a half. And I think in the end my choices were good because we had four good results in the first four games. Now when you have to play a match every three days, it’s normal to rotate. The players [have] to be smart, to understand that they sometimes go to the bench, enter, alternate. And this is the period where the club can understand if we are really, really complete in the team or maybe we could do better.

Harry Kane scored both of Spurs’ goals against Forest, making it four in his last three appearances for the England striker. He has two years left on his contract with the club and Conte is keen to keep him in north London for longer.

“We are talking about an important player for Tottenham and the desire of everyone at the club is for him to continue to stay with Tottenham and sign a new contract,” the Italian said ahead of Spurs’ move to West Ham Wednesday. “But if you ask me for details, information, I cannot answer you.”
