How to Add Hot Corners Feature from macOS to Windows 11

Apple’s macOS operating system contains some great features that Windows lacks, such as the “hot corners” tool. This feature allows you to trigger certain actions by moving the cursor to the corners of your screen.

It’s a shame Windows doesn’t have such a native feature, but at least we can add hot corners to it manually. WinXCorners and Hot Corners are third-party software packages that replicate macOS hot corners on your Windows system.

How to Add Hot Corners to Windows with WinXCorners

WinXCorners is a free application compatible with Windows 10 and 11. The software includes six default actions that you can apply to the corners of the screen, and version 1.2b of this software allows you to configure custom controls.

WinXCorners 1.2b is downloaded as a 7z archive. You will therefore need an extraction utility, such as 7-Zip, to open the program archive. If you don’t have any program that can extract 7z folders, open the 7-Zip website and get the app before continuing.

Once done, you can add hot corners to Windows 11 by downloading WinXCorners and extracting it with 7-Zip like this:

  1. Open the WinXCorners website and click the WinXCorners 1.2b download link on this web page.
  2. Open the 7-Zip extraction utility.
  3. Select the WinXCorners_1.2b archive in 7-Zip.
  4. Click on Extract to bring up the window below.
  5. Press the ellipsis button.
  6. Choose a folder in which to include an extracted WinXCorners_1.2b directory, then press OKAY to select it.
  7. Click on OKAY in the Extract window.
  8. Open the extracted folder WinXCorners_1.2b.
  9. Double-click WinXCorners.exe to run the software.
  10. If the software is disabled, click the Toggle temporarily disabled toggle in WinXCorners to enable hot corners.

Once it’s running, you can choose screen corner actions by clicking on the drop-down menus to select options for them. You can assign most of the available default actions to the four corners. Here are the default actions you can select from:

  • Hide windows: Minimizes the windows behind the active window.
  • Desk: Displays the desktop.
  • Smart screen saver: Activates the selected screen saver.
  • action center: Opens the Action Center in Windows.
  • All windows: Displays the task view which displays all window thumbnails.
  • Monitors off: Makes the display blank (you can reactivate it by clicking).

Once you have selected your actions, move your mouse pointer to the top, bottom, left, and right corners of the screen. Moving the cursor to each corner will trigger the action you assigned to it, as long as WinXCorners is running in the background.

To configure WinXCorners to start automatically at startup, right-click its system tray icon and select Start with windows.

You can also set hot corners to open desktop software, which will allow you to open a program by moving the cursor to a corner. To do this, you will need to configure WinXCorners to open a program through its Advanced Options window as follows:

  1. First, select the Custom order option for a corner on one of the WinXCorners drop-down menus.
  2. Right-click the WinXCorners system tray icon and select Advanced.
  3. Select the Enable Custom Order in the Advanced Options window.
  4. Paste a path to a program’s EXE file in the Custom Command box, and then click the OKAY button.

Now the program will open whenever you move the cursor over the chosen corner.

How to Add Hot Corners with Hot Corners Software

Hot Corners is an alternative to WinXCorners that works pretty much the same way. However, this program has different actions that you can set for the corners of the screen.

Hot Corners is a very lightweight application that you can use on most Windows platforms. Here is how you can add hot corners to Windows 11 with Hot Corners software:

  1. Click on Download now on Hot Corners Softpedia page.
  2. Select Download: Softpedia Mirror (US) for the server location.
  3. Open the file manager app by tapping To win + E.
  4. Navigate to the directory containing the Hot Corners installer.
  5. Right click on HC-2-2-0.exe and select Execute as administrator.
  6. Click on Next and Yes to accept the copyright agreement.
  7. Select the Run Hot Corners after installation is complete setting and press Next.
  8. Follow the instructions until the end.

Hot Corners includes nine action options to choose from. For example, you can set actions to open system locations like Control Panel and My Documents, or you can set a corner to lock your PC or put it to sleep.

If you select google search, moving the cursor over a corner will bring up a small search box. Entering a keyword in this box will display Google search results in your default browser.

You can also configure each corner to open different programs with Hot Corners. To define a program for a corner, click on the corresponding drop-down menu and select To run. Click it ellipsis in the Run window and select a program. Then select OKAY on all windows.

You will notice that Hot Corners includes a Mouse movement tongue. This feature is supposed to allow users to activate actions by moving the mouse up, down, left and right. However, this feature has a To win + X activation hotkey, which conflicts with the Power User menu in Windows 11. Therefore, this feature only works on Windows platforms that do not have Power User menus, such as Vista and 7.

Also note that Hot Corners does not save settings when you are not running it as an administrator. So make sure to always run the software with elevated permissions. The best thing to do is to configure the program to always run as an administrator through its Compatibility tab like this:

  1. Open the Hot Corners installation folder.
  2. Right-click the Hot Corners.exe file and select Properties.
  3. Click on Compatibility in the Hot Corners Properties window.
  4. Select Run this program as administrator and click on the Apply (save) button.

Now Hot Corners should always work with elevated permissions. To add the program to your Startup Items, click Choice > Settings in hot spots. Select the Run at startup check box, then click OKAY in the Settings window.

Hot Corners adds a new feature to Windows 11

So now you can use one of the best macOS features of Windows 11 with WinXCorners and Hot Corners. The hot corners that these software packages enable give you a new way to trigger common actions and open programs in Windows.
